Split by Logical Sections

Divide documents at natural chapter or section boundaries rather than arbitrary page numbers. This creates self-contained files that make sense on their own.

Use a Clear Naming Convention

Name split files descriptively (report-chapter1.pdf, report-appendix.pdf) rather than generic names. This makes files easy to find and identify later.

Keep the Original Intact

Always preserve the original PDF before splitting. You may need to re-split with different page selections later, and the original serves as your master copy.

Extract Only What You Need

Rather than splitting an entire document into individual pages, extract only the specific pages or sections you actually need. This reduces file clutter and storage usage.

Verify Extracted Pages

Open each split PDF to confirm the correct pages were extracted and that no content was cut off at page boundaries, especially for documents with complex layouts.

Consider File Size for Sharing

Splitting large PDFs makes them easier to email or upload. Many email providers have 25MB attachment limits, so splitting helps you stay under that threshold.

Share Only Relevant Pages

Use page splitting to isolate specific sections of a large report or manual for sharing with different teams or clients. Instead of sharing a 100-page document when only 10 pages are relevant, extract and share only what is needed.

Split Batch Scans into Individual Records

Extract individual pages from a combined scan to create separate records. For example, splitting a batch-scanned document into individual invoices, receipts, or forms makes filing and retrieval much more efficient.

Compress Split Files if Needed

After splitting, run each extracted PDF through the PDF compressor if file sizes are still large. Individual pages extracted from a high-quality source PDF can still be several megabytes, especially if they contain high-resolution images.

Verify No Sensitive Content Remains

When removing confidential pages from a document before sharing, verify that the extraction removed all sensitive content. Open the extracted file and search for any keywords that should not be present to confirm that no sensitive data was inadvertently included.
